The National Science Foundation (NSF) is an independent federal agency that supports fundamental research and education across all fields of science and engineering. In fiscal year (FY) 2020, its budget is $8.3 billion. NSF funds reach all 50 states through grants to nearly 2,000 colleges, universities and other institutions. Each year, NSF receives more than 50,000 competitive proposals for funding and makes about 12,000 new funding awards.

Program Overview
The goal of the NSF Smart and Connected Communities (S&CC) program is to accelerate the creation of the scientific and engineering foundations that will enable smart and connected communities to bring about new levels of economic opportunity and growth, safety and security, health and wellness, and overall quality of life. This goal will be achieved through integrative research projects that pair advances in technological and social dimensions with meaningful community engagement.

Additional Information
In light of the December 2018-January 2019 appropriations lapse, NSF opted to run a single S&CC competition spanning FY 2019 and FY 2020 in FY 2020. This approach accounts for the variability in investment between FY 2018 and FY 2020.
