State broadband website(s):

The Commonwealth established Massachusetts Broadband Institute (MBI) in 2008 as a division within the Massachusetts Technology Collaborative to help coordinate state efforts to expand broadband to unserved and underserved areas of the Commonwealth. MBI works closely with the Executive Office of Housing and Economic Development to coordinate these efforts. The Public Safety Broadband Office coordinates with the FirstNet regarding the implementation of a nationwide, high-speed, wireless data network dedicated to public safety.

MBI administers the Last Mile Program, a grant program targeting unserved municipalities and the Broadband Extension Grant Program which targets ‘partially-served’ municipalities. The Executive Office of Housing and Economic Development also administers a Last Mile Infrastructure Grant Program that has expanded grants for municipal-owned broadband projects in unserved communities. Massachusetts has state broadband mapping capabilities to understand the needs of under- and unserved communities. The Commonwealth also offers the Digital Connection Initiative, which will provides tools, assistance and funding to bridge the digital divide in schools through FY2019.
